7. The USS Indianapolis
It was near the end of World War II in 1945, and the United States was getting ready to make and drop the Atomic Bombs on two targets in Japan. But, the Uranium needed to be transported to a certain site close to Japan. The USS Indianapolis was assigned that job. They completed that job and shipped out again in the Philippine Sea. However, they never made it to their next target as they were found by a Japanese submarine who sank the ship.
6. Praia de Boa Viagem
The beach known as Praia de Boa Viagem can be found near the city of Recife in Brazil, and at first glance, it may seem like a perfectly regular and beautiful beach. But since it started up as a beach in 1992, the beach has been infamous for shark attacks. There have been 50 reported once since the opening, with 19 of those 50 being fatal attacks on the people there. Not exactly what you want to hear when you're considering vacationing there.
5. Bethany Hamilton
When you think about shark attacks, you often think about those who died. And the ones who survive are "forever altered" by the experience. But there are some who refused to let the events shape their lives forever. Bethany Hamilton is a great example of this.
In 2003, she, her friend, and her friend’s family were out swimming and surfing in Hawaii when a Tiger Shark came out of nowhere and took Bethany's left arm almost clean off. Her friends were able to get her to shore and her friend's father was able to patch her up enough to get her to the hospital. Because of the nature of the injury, she lost 60% of her blood by the time she got to the hospital.
4. The Dolphin Protection Ring
Here is a story about sharks that came very close to attack, and indeed was horrifying, but was prevented in the most extraordinary of ways.
Rob Howes, his fellow lifeguards, and his daughter were in the waters of Whangarei, New Zealand swimming without anything going wrong. But then, they noticed something, seven dolphins appeared around them. What's more, they circled around the group as they kept swimming.
Howes and one of the others went away from the swimmers and the dolphins. When they did, one dolphin followed them. This made no sense to Howes, and he wondered what was going on. One of the dolphins suddenly dove into the waters, and Howes decided to see what was going on. As he did, he was stunned, for a Great White Shark was just beneath them, and the dolphin was warding it off.
3. Allan Oppert
Allan Oppert lived in Binningup, in the south-west corner of Western Australia, and like most Sundays he had been out with his friends before heading out into the ocean in a large group to go and do some diving. The friends had done many adventures in the ocean together and they felt that this particular Sunday would be no different. They were wrong.
2. Ken Crew
Unlike some of the shark attacks described, the tale of Ken Crew of Western Australia does not have a happy or "lucky to be alive" ending, because his absolutely went and ended in his death. And to this day, people are still trying to figure out how it happened so quickly and how the shark struck him. His friend Jerry Ventouras described the attack in an interview, stating:
"I turned around and saw this enormous fin travelling on the inside of Ken. It came in behind him. It was surreal. This damn big shark – somewhere between 15 and 18 feet (5m-6m) – head up out of the water, its jaws wide open surging towards Ken. Without even stopping, [it] seemed to grab him across the lower half of his body, lift him out of the water and give him a couple of shakes like a dog would shake at a bone, [and then] dropped him in the middle of the pool in a great cloud of blood. There was no sound."
1. Bernie Williams
In 2004, Bernie Williams was the victim of a shark attack partially because of dumb luck. You see, he was off the coast of the city of Perth and was diving with friends looking for seashells and some other rare marine creatures when he realized that another boat had pulled up alongside his boat. He quickly surfaced and noticed that they weren't looking at his boat, but for something in the water, so he went back down to dive.
That was a mistake, because that boat was coming to warn them about the sharks that had been seen in the area. And the reason they were looking into the water was to try and find the divers that they didn't realize were right behind them.
