When the week began, sunspot AR2835 was big. Now it's really big. The active region has nearly doubled in size over the past 24 hours. As the sunspot has grown, its magnetic structure has become more complex. When magnetic fields of opposite polarity bump together, they can explode. The process is known as magnetic reconnection, and it is responsible for solar flares.

Sunspot AR2835 has a 'delta-class' magnetic field that harbors energy for strong M-class solar flares. Any flares today will be geoeffective as the sunspot is directly facing Earth.

AR2835 is big enough for amateur astronomers with decent equipment to spot from their backyards, weather permitting.

Warning: Never look at the sun directly with telescopes or the unaided eye. Special filters are required for safe solar viewing to avoid serious eye damage.

Stay Tuned!
