For the past 20 years, Mauro Fortini has appeared behind almost every politician interviewed on Italian TV, armed with a pen in his mouth and waving a notebook. Even if he moves along with the other reporters and imitates their gestures, he is not a journalist. He defines himself as a “news attendee”, others call him a heckler.

Every day he wakes up at 5AM, checks where the live broadcasts will be, and waits around ready to jump into frame. According to his own calculations, he has appeared on the news more than 8,500 times since 1999.
