Why do we all have the same idea of how they generally look?

At first I thought it was a mainstream or hollywood thing, but after my experience of coming "in contact" with them and seeing them myself along with a friend (yeah I know, very unbelievable), It is kind of mind blowing that they look exactly as depicted in movies, and the pictures/videos that out there of how they might look.
