China has discovered a new material on the moon. A crystal that is composed mostly of stable helium-3, which could be the key to unlocking sustainable fusion reactions. Since non-terrestrial beings have been mining the moon, presumably for helium-3, there will soon be competition and trade for this valuable resource.
We will either have to compete for lunar resources or set up a trade agreement with mining rights with whoever is out there. This will be our introduction to the galactic community. Hopefully this will be an equitable agreement that benefits both sides, but considering the current state of affairs on earth I'm not holding my breath.
More than likely, the global military industrial complex will seize upon this as an opportunity to unify the planet against the "alien aggressors stealing earth's future of limitless energy." Nothing unifies people more than an outside threat.
There is always the chance that this can lead to a beneficial treaty, but I have a feeling that human avarice will win out. Hopefully we won't make the mistake of starting a resource war with a vastly superior power and will instead work towards a future where energy is effectively free and limitless. Unfortunately, we know enough about human history to know where this is going to go.
