There are so many things that "they" could be, and could be capable of, that it's incredibly hard for us to speculate about any sort of motive on their part.
But IF there's one thing we can say for certain about them, it's that at least some of them have humanoid body features. Of course, the "Little Grays" could be projections/machines that something wishing to disguise itself decided to make appear shockingly similar to us, while still clearly being alien. But if this "projection" hypothesis were true, it would leave some strange questions - why chose to appear as a consistent yet clearly alien form (big black eyes, thin humanoid body, etc.) if you were trying to conceal your presence? (And if they aren't trying to conceal their presence, they're just incompetent). They seem so secretive that it seems more likely that - at least some of them - actually look strikingly like us.
Discounting the very unlikely possibility of convergent evolution, this then leaves me with two options: we share a common creator, or they are the creators.
