What makes me doubt this hypothesis is that no matter what the occupants of the UFOs looked like (to witnesses). They seem to share the same protocols of no direct and no global contact with humans. Because IMO, if there was another species of aliens that visited earth in the past (that had no link to the current aliens, or are not allies), they should at least use another method/tactic of revealing themselves, and could be also a very direct contact.
