With society increasing pressure on modern-day students to perform well and excel in everything they do, burnouts become a persistent problem that not everyone recognises and addresses well. Since the end of 2020, I noticed that I was working day to night with little to no productivity and minimal progress. I pushed myself beyond my limits and told myself I would have to work harder to keep up with other hardworking and determined people out there. I continuously denied that I was going through a burnout — that is, until I spent time with my family during the Chinese New Year, when I realised that I needed a break from all schoolwork and just live life as a normal teenager, not a student. With this, I would like to tell my community that it is okay to go at your own pace, it is alright to experience a burnout and take a break from what you are doing, and it is okay to treat yourself once in a while. Each person may experience burnouts differently, but if my advice can help even one person recover from this vicious cycle, it will mean a lot to both that person and myself.
