I felt silly posting this but at least here it might be engaged with more in discussion. I don't know why Aliens would be here nor do I want to claim that it is the truth but I still wanted to have a discussion about it where I could find people that might be more open to discussing or engaging with the idea. This is meant in good faith so I hope that can be respected, even in criticism.
Introduction
There is a recurring response a lot of skeptics and scientists have to the discussion about UAP's and E.T and it is presented as a question somewhat like this:
"If there are Extraterrestrials who have mastered interstellar travel and are so far beyond us, why would they spend all those resources and time to travel to a place like Earth?"
Usually this is followed up by arguments that resources are plentiful in space and that a spacefaring civilization no longer would need planets to sustain itself together with the other argument. That humanity overplays itself like always thinking its important enough to garner the attention of a species travelling the stars, so far ahead technologically that we are like cave men to them, or animals.
There is truth to this, basically all base components for non-life needs exist between the stars, water is abundant, minerals are abundant, even rare-earth materials or REM are abundant. A spacefaring civilization that have mastered space could easily gather it in infinite amounts.
But and like most STEM people seem to miss is that there are other things than material possesions that have value. I want to say that I view material sciences highly, but its easy to forget that fields like humanities and social studies exist and does have value both for society at large but also because humans seek knowledge for knowledge's sake. It is not always inherently for a benefit. This is where I fundamentally disagree on the notion that Earth does not potentially hold something valuable.
Let me preface that this speculation is still constrained by some factors. We do not know how common life is in the universe, if scarce I would argue it strengthens my speculation but if abundant it could be that we aren't that important. I will explore both in the next part.
The case of Earth and its significance
Primarily I will not assume either benevolence or malevolence, if anything I would think Extraterrestrials would fall inbetween as a neutral observer/scientist more than anything else.
I thought a lot about the reason why Earth would be visited by Extraterrestrials if they could visit us. There are many reasons easily dismissed with how abundant resources are in space. As someone that is also materially minded I never really considered conciousness and all the more abstract theories out there. They will not feature here.
That left me with one logic, and it is akin to the 'Zoo Hypothesis'.
Humans in themselves are still insignificant at the galactic large for most parts but one thing we do have is that we are a developing civilization with a very varied and large ecological system that even we don't understand. If we enter first with the premise that life is scarce in the universe, from a human perspective, especially a sociologist or historical perspective the value of finding another species developing at an earlier phase would be a gold mine of knowledge.
Not only does it allow reflection on once own society, but also the differences and how systems vary. If life is scarce it would make even more sense for Extraterrestrials to study the few they find with sentient, developing civilizations. If applying human rationality, which is obviously flawed as a perspective but I feel it can still offer some accuracy because a space faring civilization would need to have some form of curiosity or drive to travel beyond their home system. The study of another civilization at a different stage of development would seem like one of those things you would just do.
Even in a universe where life is abundant it makes a modicum of sense to do that. Because different civilizations would provide empirical data and probably vary wildly. To me it would make sense if a few of the UAP's were just Alien PhD students writing a thesis on human development in the last 50 planetary cycles or something.
It might sound mundane and I make partially light of it but I could easily see that as one explanation.
Together with this there is a secondary part to this in the form of biology. This however relies more on life being scarce than sociological studies. If life is abundant, again it would make a bit of sense to study but not as much.
This comes from finding out about the widespread existence, documentation and investigations into cattle mutilations and a few seperate cases of human mutilation with similar signs of mutilation. These include the surgical removal of, eyes, organs, sex organs, blood and more. In both human and cattle cases. Of course this is not confirmed but if we go with the assumption for speculation's sake that this is done by Extraterrestrials it could be a way of gathering biological samples for research purposes. Even if they knew DNA it wouldn't explain perfectly the development in nature, and as a fine fellow from r/UFO speculated here much better than I can it would make sense to gather certain biological materials and the most abundant animal on Earth already meant for slaughter is cattle. That way they can avoid harming humans as much as possible, though some cases of human mutilation like cases exist but significantly fewer.
Biology and biological studies would be rare and concentrated to habitable planets, it is not a resource most likely in abundance in space and would be one of those things worth studying. Particularly it could even aid your own programmes by increasing understanding of how your own biology works.
Conclusion
I think sociology and biology are important resources as knowledge in itself and could be a reason Extraterrestrials would visit Earth.
This is already a long ass post and I am glad if you made it through with your sanity in place. Sorry bout that.
However like everything here it is purely speculation, I don't know more than you guys and most of the fact that I trust is based on what can be sourced from the UAP stuff from the Govt and Pentagon even if I do make my own theories based on that information and others who are fairly credible like Ross.
This is just speculation and maybe it rings with someone or there is something you would like to add, I would love to hear it.
I was listening to Star Trek songs writing this, having had a fear of Aliens for my entire life but also a fascination, the potential of them just wanting to know more about us like Star Fleet explores the galaxy to find new cultures gives me a weak hope and a bit more positive feelings towards the strong dread I feel the more I read about this because it feels like everything the government says right now seems to prove that something is out there.
Addendum: Yes this is from a human perspective to a degree, but as a materialist, I do believe even if there will be differences that some similarities will also exist with what different species wants to do.
