Matter in CA Sky

Ok, so this actually occured when I was in high school around 2015 in the Central Valley of CA. I think it also matters to point out I used to live on the outskirts of a city that is about 2 hours outside of Yosemite. So my bedroom window faced towards town and it was about 9pm on a summer night. I looked out my window and at first saw what i though was an airplane blinking light, except as i watched i realized it was changing colors. Morphing colors really from red,orange yellow to green and blue. It also must have been heading towards our house because it became larger. I somewhat freaked out and grabbed my stepdad who had lots of military friends and asked if he knew what it was, like a drone or something. After he and I watched it for a while it DARTED across our skyline in literally a blink of an eye. No noise or anything, it then split into two. This glowing was I guess the best way to describe was like a plasma? It just seemed to flow and ebb, and the split matter would break from one another move around and sometimes join back together. My stepdad witnessed this and pulled out a camera and actually called 911 and asked if there were military drills going on and explained to the dispatcher what was happening. We were told not to worry and that she would report the incident. It wasnt long after calling it it that we watched the colored matter just disapear. I went back to just hanging in my room with my window open since it was a hot summer night when there was a huge boom sound and what appeared to be a plane/jet in the vicinity of where I had seen the flying matter. To this day I feel like it was something paranormal, and I wish I was able to contact my ex-stepfather for the recording. Anyways I guess I was just wondering if anyone else has seen something like this in the sky? With the ability to break apart and rejoin in the blink of an eye.
