What other literature do you read?

Everybody who is active in science reads papers, but what about magazines? Books? Blogs?

An example that I particularly enjoy is Jeremy Kun's blog. He posts really informative primers about algebra, information theory, neat computational problems, etc. that are interesting and informative to people with a STEM background but who aren't necessarily involved in CS theory. It would be interesting to hear about other things of that nature.

I like to keep up in the academic world within and without physics (my background is in EE and I'm a physics Ph.D. student now), but it seems like most books that aren't textbooks are geared towards non-scientists. Same for most news outlets- I like reading opinion pieces, discussion, etc. on recent developments outside of my field (quantum communication), that aren't necessarily drooling over the implications for quantum computers and FTL travel.

Experimental way of understanding which quantum operators commute?

Analytically, it's easy for me to calculate commutators and figure out which operators commute. But I feel like my physical intuition for how and why different operators commute would be greatly enhanced if I actually understood how the experiments to measure position, momentum, energy, or angular momentum are carried out.

Any tips?

Griffiths has taught me how to measure spin... but I'm in the dark as far as measuring the other observables.

Thanks!

Is it Worth Applying to Lesser Known REU Schools?

I'm a 1st year applying to REU's and it's been tough finding a lot of schools to apply to that only take 1 letter of rec (I have only taken 1 physics course so far so I can only get 1 rec letter) and some schools fit my requirements but seem to be lesser known/ranked schools and I dont know if I should apply. I thought it would be good to apply because it's better than nothing, but my alternative plan is to self study a year's worth of material to get ahead and that might be better than doing something pointless. Has anyone been in this situation?

[Questions] about the physical properties and behavior of light.

I have a few questions about the physical properties and behavior of light.

  1. What is happening to light particles/waves when they pass through an object?

  2. How does an object getting thicker affect the particles/waves of light? Fore example, as you add more layers of cloth, less light passes through.

  3. Why does the density of an object not seem to matter when it comes to light passing through, but the clarity does? For example, water will eventually pass through wood, but light does not. However, water doesn't pass through glass, but light does?

  4. Why does the opacity of an object affect how much light passes through, even if the density or thickness of the object is unchanged?

How do people make sense of quantum mechanics?

How do people make sense out of quantum mechanics? This is a very general question, but I am really struggling. Consider Bell's inequality, for example. To explain what it means to the nature of our universe, there are two ways:

1) The first is provided by Bell himself: There is a way to escape the inference of superluminal speeds and spooky action at a distance. But it involves absolute determinism in the universe, the complete absence of free will. Suppose the world is super-deterministic, with not just inanimate nature running on behind-the-scenes clockwork, but with our behavior, including our belief that we are free to choose to do one experiment rather than another, absolutely predetermined, including the "decision" by the experimenter to carry out one set of measurements rather than another, the difficulty disappears. There is no need for a faster than light signal to tell particle A what measurement has been carried out on particle B, because the universe, including particle A, already "knows" what that measurement, and its outcome, will be.

2) Our universe is somewhat a "simulation", not "real". When the particles do not interact with anything else, they are in a "reduced" state (e.g. so as to save "computational cost"); when they are observed by or interacting with something else, their status collapse to "real" ones.

These are the only two views that can keep my mind from being completely exploded. But, I am struggling to take any of them!

How do you "survive" quantum mechanics?

Publicly Accessible Astronomy Databases

I'm currently planning to do an EE in Physics on the subject of astronomy. Are there any publicly available astronomy databases (frequently updated?) suitable for a database analysis EE? I'm thinking of doing something on light curve analysis, maybe on transients. A database with such data available would be great - preferably many data points to plot on a graph, analysing trends and standard deviations, etc.

I'm currently taking HL Maths and Physics if that is of any significance.

P.S. If the database has photos of the recorded object as well it would be awesome :)

I sure as hell want to be an astronaut when I'm older, and here's why...

I really want to help people one day, and have a career that involves practical science. But all in all, wether it's greedy or merely human, I want my name immortlized in future history holo-books.

And I think I know how to become famous.

One word. Frontier.

The Frontier of the Renaissance was radical changes in culture and science, so we remember the painters and scientists like Da Vinci and Michaelangelo. The Frontier of the Reformation was great religious change, so we remember the religious reformers like John Calvin and Martin Luther. The Frontier of the Age of Exploration was overseas exploration so we remember explorers like Pizarro and da Gama. The Frontier of the Wild West was the Wild West and its dangerous terrain, so we remember the cowboys nd crooks like Amanda Blake and Bill Williams. The Frontier of World War 2 was the war and its politics, so we remember leaders and soldiers like Hirohito and Jack Churchill (this guy here >> http://ift.tt/15tRcrY).

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are in the Space Age, and will be for a long time. Buzz Aldrin. Niell Arsmstrong. Tim Peake wil probably go down in history. So, there's already a lot of people who's names will stay in the minds and hearts of future generations as they too tread into the starry veil above.

Wanna be famous forever more? Now's a good time to be an astronaut, people.

P.S. I'm aware that you can't just BE an astronaut. I myself have type 1 diabetes, and at the moment that could stop me from going into space, but hey, maybe they'll stick an insulin injection system into my suit, and stcik a refrigerator on the ISS. Space technology has plenty of time to advance until I'm old enough. Enough about me though, some people may not have the physical requirements, but you can always do something on earth. Anyway, I sacrifice these thoughts to you, redditites/-ians/-goers.

How to calculate "penetration"

Didnt know if i should ask in maths or here. But physics is math. So. Yeah.

What is the formula that tells me if a 27mm bullet could penetrate a 30mm steel wall?

Which angle, thickness of object, thickness of bullet, velocity and object material can this formula be used with?

Tunnel junctions in solar cells - WHY DO THEY WORK?

Hey /r/physics, So I'm working on some engineering multijunction PV work, and I know that tunnel junctions are essential to their success, but dammit, I can't figure out why they work theoretically. So here's your standard band diagram for a TJ in a tandem cell. Now the way I see it, when the electron or hole moves across the junction, it just ends up as the majority carrier on the other side which makes it moot as far as the operation of the cell goes, right? We only care about minority carriers, so how does that electron going through the tunnel junction into the valence band create a series connection between the single cells? It's driving me crazy!

NASA HACK

In 2002, Gary McKinnon was responsible for perpetrating the “Biggest Military Computer Hack Of All Time.” This was big news, but the mainstream media would rarely broadcast what Gary actually found. When Gary hacked into NASA, he didn’t only find evidence that proved UFOs were real, he also found a list of “non-terrestrial” officers that worked within NASA as well as Space images that had been opened in photoshop to edit out strange objects.

EXTRATERRESTRIALS - TALL WHITES

There are a lot of Conspiracies on Extraterrestrials and the Government which are famously linked - some claim they are hiding them whilst others claim they roam the Earth unknowingly. There are many different types of “Aliens” - there is a short documentary of a man who was visited by a certain type of Alien (A Tall White) and she left two hair strands on the man’s body. The hair strands were sent for analysis and it was classified that the DNA came from someone who was biologically close to humans in normal genetics - but wasn’t “human”.

Physics and Science Search Engine

Hello Folks,

I am the author of Scientillion.com which is a fairly new search engine for Physics publications and am looking for some feedback for the project. The level of the articles indexed is purely scientific so it might not be interesting for a wider public, but if you are in research like me the tool might be really helpfull since it is providing a fulltext search interface for ArXiv.org, the largest e-print database for Physics in the web. In contrast to other search engines the focus in on providing high quality results only rather than having all possible publications in the index. I would be really happy to receive your feedback, suggestions or criticism. Thanks!

You find the project here: http://ift.tt/1Jzav0B

@Mods: I would be glad if this post survives censorship here since the tool it is about should be really useful to some of the users here while their feedback can help improving its quality. Thanks again!

So, everyone obviously knows (or mostly everyone at least) that the earth is a sphere. People can stand on any point on the earth. What is the smallest size an object in space can be that would cause the same effect?

I posted my space simulator game about a week ago. Since then, I've added a few features, including ZOOMING! Let me know what you think!

I'm hoping y'all are fine with me posting this here again. I figured you guys would want to see your sugestions added. Here is the link to the game, and here is the reddit post:

I am a beginner programmer, 16 years old. It isn't much, but here is the game. Let me know if there is anything that you feel is missing, or if there is another feature related to physics and gravity that I could implement. (Example: If you focus on a planet, and hold the mouse button down, a green dot will appear, showing you where to fire the planet to achieve a perfect orbit.) I am really looking for feedback, so if you are confused about anything, you can't figure out a feature or something, let me know so that I can fix it :)

Things to try:

  • Make one planet orbit another
  • Give that planet a moon
  • Shift + click on a planet
  • Turning on backgrounds
  • Turning on trails
  • Click anything and everything

Features that I want to add next:

  • Slow motion/speeding up
  • Planets breaking apart when one hits it hard enough

As before, I would like to hear some feedback! Did you find any bugs? Is there anything that should absolutely be in the game? Anything that should be done better? Tell me what you want to see added!

I always tend to look up when it is a clear sky. I have had my fair share of shooting stars and such. One night i was walking and decided to look up when i saw something, it looked like a shooting star but seem much bigger and brighter. It looked like it glowed an orange color and left a little noticeable smoke trail. Does anybody know what it sounds like i saw? I have always believed it was a comet but would like to know for sure.
